ABOUT THE DESIGN

The Big Dance, written by Joe Zappulla, is a student written work for RareWorks Theatre Company's spring 2018 season. It is a comedy that tells the story of 2 young kids, Clam and Gerge, as they concoct a plan to escape from their kidnapper on the day of the big dance. The kidnapper is Brother Joshua, a religious man who is trying to convert them to the ways of Zardon the beautiful goddess whom he worships.

The entire play takes place in a basement kindergarten/Sunday school classroom that has been abandoned for years.  The director wanted to make the audience feel tight and cramped, like the characters in the play. The basement had to be gross and moldy while still being festive for the big dance.
